Formalin exposure can cause health issues, but Addax Biosciences' Glyoxal Acid-Free (GAF) is a safer, non-toxic alternative, offering excellent tissue preservation without the risks.
The use of formalin can cause serious damage to health. |
Formalin is considered an irritant and toxic substance. Exposure to it may cause allergies, induce eczema, and lead to respiratory asthma.
Furthermore, over the past decade, the scientific community has discovered that inhalation of formalin (which is highly volatile) may increase cancer risk (Figure 1).

Addax Biosciences proposes replacing formalin with Glyoxal Acid-Free (GAF), a non-toxic and non-carcinogenic fixative solution that offers equivalent (if not superior) histological efficacy. This responds to the need to protect workers' and patients' health (Figure 2).

Advantages Over Formalin
Safety: GAF eliminates the carcinogenic risks associated with formaldehyde, aligning with EU legislation that mandates safer alternatives in laboratory settings. This makes it suitable for routine histopathological applications.
Efficacy: Studies have shown that glyoxal fixation provides comparable or superior results in immunostaining and molecular analyses compared to formalin, including better preservation of antigenicity and structural integrity of tissues.
Validation: Clinical trials conducted at institutions such as the San Giovanni Battista Hospital in Turin have validated GAF's performance against traditional formalin fixation methods, confirming its reliability for diagnostic purposes.
Applications |
GAF is suitable for a wide range of histological techniques, including:
-
Immunohistochemistry: Enhanced preservation of antigens allows for more accurate staining results.
-
Molecular Biology: Maintains nucleic acid integrity, facilitating downstream applications such as PCR and sequencing.
-
General Tissue Fixation: Effective for various types of biological tissues, ensuring optimal preservation for pathological examination.
