Human joints are complex with different tissues. Each tissue has proper properties.

Articular Cartilage is composed of only one specialized cell type, the chondrocytes, which are dispersed in an extracellular matrix rich in type II collagen (giving resistance to the tissue) and in aggrecans (contributing to viscoelasticity).. The role of cartilage is to transmit and distribute loads during joint movements.

Meniscus are composed from fibrocartilage where the expression of type I collagen is higher than in hyaline cartilage. They are positioned on either side of the inner and outer compartments of the knee. They play the role of shock absorbers (with the ligaments) and ensure good stability of the knee.

Synovial Membrane is a connective tissue in contact with synovial fluid. Synovial membrane is composed of rouded-macrophage-like synovial cells (type A) and also fibroblast-like synoviocytes FLS (type B).Type A cells maintain the synovial fluid by removing wear-and-tear debris and FLS produce hyaluronan, as well as other extracellular components in the synovial fluid.

Synovial fluid is biological fluid produced by the synovial membrane. This liquid is viscous, transparent or pale yellow.

Human chondrocytes are isolated from normal human articular cartilage from the knee or hip joints.

Human fibrochondrocytes are isolated from human meniscus from the knee.

Human Synoviocytes are isolated from human synovial membrane from the knee.
