The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the keratin gene family. The type II cytokeratins consist of basic or neutral proteins which are arranged in pairs of heterotypic keratin chains coexpressed during differentiation of simple and stratified epithelial tissues.
Synonyms
KRT5, K5, CK5, DDD, DDD1, EBS2, KRT5A
Clonality
Polyclonal
Immunogen
Recombinant human Keratin 5
Specificity
Basic keratin K5 (Mr 58 000; formerly also designated cytokeratin 5), expressed in basal and first suprabasal layers of epidermis. The antiserum reacts with keratin K5, expressed in the basal cells of the larynx, esophagus, trachea, bladder, prostate, cervix, vagina, breast acini, skin and sweat glands. In several studies the correlation between the expression of keratin K5 in different types of carcinomas (putatively derived from basal epithelial cells) and prognosis has been discussed (see references listed below).
