Campy Agar- Selective solid media for microbiology
Campy Selective Agar Base is a highly nutritious medium for the selective isolation of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. Many experts consider Campylobacter to be the main cause of enteric diseases. Campylobacter spp. pathogens are highly infectious and transmitted through contaminated food or water. The Campy selective agar base (powder) is based on the formulation described by Bolton and Robertson. This formulation was developed to isolate Campylobacter spp. from human, animal and environmental specimens. Preston's formulation has demonstrated improved recovery and selectivity of Campylobacter spp. in comparative studies with other selective media (Skirrow, Butzler, Blaser and Campy-Blood Agar). Enzymatic digestion of animal tissues and enzymatic digestion of casein are the source of nitrogen and vitamins in this medium. Sodium chloride provides the osmotic environment. Agar is the solidifying agent. Antimicrobials are added to suppress the normal enteric flora and promote the growth of Campylobacter spp. The addition of 5% lysed horse blood provides essential growth factors.
