Rappaport Vassiliadis (R10) Broth - Selective liquid media for microbiology
Rappaport Vassiliadis broth (or R10 broth) is used as a selective enrichment medium for the isolation of Salmonella species from food and environmental specimens. Rappaport-Vassiliadis R10 Broth is a selective enrichment medium used after pre-enrichment of the sample in a suitable medium. This medium is approved for the analysis of milk, dairy products4 and raw meats, as well as highly contaminated food and feed products. It is also recommended for the selective enrichment of Salmonella other than Salmonella Typhi in human fecal samples. In this broth, tryptone is a source of carbon and nitrogen providing standard growth conditions. Magnesium chloride increases the osmotic pressure of the medium. Malachite green inhibits microorganisms other than Salmonellae. The low pH of the medium (5.1 ± 0.2), associated with the presence of malachite green and the high concentration of magnesium chloride which increases the osmotic pressure, is selective for Salmonella spp.
