Additional Information | Background: Tubulin is the major building block of microtubules which is essential in cell structures, transportation and mitosis. This superfamily is composed of six distinct families. Alpha, beta, and gamma tubulin families are found in all eukaryotes. The alpha and beta tubulins represent the major components of microtubules, while gamma tubulin plays a critical role in the nucleation of microtubule assembly. There are multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes, which are highly conserved among species. The abundance of Gamma tubulin is less than 1% of the level of either alpha or beta tubulin. It shares approximately 28-32% identity with alpha tubulin from various organisms and 32-36% identity with beta tubulins. Each subunit is a 50 kDa acidic protein. The detection, localization and characterization of proteins involved in microtubule function is fundamental to the understanding of mitosis, meiosis and the microtubule cytoskeleton. |
